(Ellsworth) — A meeting with the Hancock County Commissioners in March
showed area communities are skeptical at best about regionalizing services.
Selectmen Perry Fowler and Jo Cooper attended the meeting along with Administrative
Assistant Stu Marckoon. Representatives from Mt. Desert, Franklin and Bar
Harbor were very vocal in their opposition to exploring ways to regionalize
and try to save money.
The Commissioners did agree to form a committee to look at where the County’s tax dollars are spent. A Selectman from Mt. Desert expressed serious concern that his town received virtually no services for hundreds of thousands of dollars in county tax payments.
The Commissioners sent out a flyer to all communities looking
for volunteers to serve on the committee. Anyone interest from Lamoine must
be an appointed municipal official, and should contact the Board of Selectmen
for consideration to serve on the panel. A meeting schedule for the new committee
has yet to be formulated.
