School May Become Disaster Shelter

(Lamoine) — Disasters are rare in Lamoine, but they happen. The 1998 ice storm qualifies. Some people left without power who needed heat and water used disaster facilities in Ellsworth for shelter, as no official shelter exists in Lamoine. The American Red Cross surveyed the Lamoine School this winter as a sheltering option. The school has everything for essential needs, and has a generator hookup installed by the fire department. The gym can feed and house a lot of people if needed. The Red Cross should finalize its assessment soon, and may provide shelter operations training to interested local personnel. The designation should not cost any tax dollars.
