2004 Tax Rate Should Remain Stable

(Lamoine) — Despite spending increases approved at town meeting, the tax rate for 2004/05 should remain around 14-mills. A couple of things contribute to stable tax rate.

The biggest factor should be new construction and valuation. The construction boom is still under way, and the Board of Assessors should be able to find a significant increase in taxable value as of April 1st. The initial projection on the tax rate used the same average rate of valuation increase as in previous years (around 3% or 3.2 million dollars). Town meeting voters also agreed to used $75,000 from the town’s surplus account to offset property taxes.
