Gravel Pit Expansion Proposed

(Lamoine) — A public hearing is scheduled for July 6th on the first of two permits needed to expand a Douglas Highway gravel pit operation by Harold MacQuinn, Inc. The Board will hear testimony about plans by the company to mine gravel from land adjacent to its Kittridge pit, but owned by Ralph & Mary Miro. The permit application is for 29-acres and is available for public inspection at the Town Hall.

In addition to the Gravel Permit, the project also falls under the Site Plan Review Ordinance passed a few years ago by Lamoine Voters. An attorney for the company dropped that application off at the town office in late June, and it will be scheduled for the August Planning Board meeting. The Planning Board has asked the town attorney for his opinion on the fee associated with the latter permit—whether it applies only to the expanded land, or to the entire excavation area.
