Cable TV Channel Up & Running

(Lamoine) — Standby—Channel 7 is on the air (so to speak). Adelphia Cable TV subscribers in Lamoine can now watch the local government channel which has been up and running since late May. Currently the channel features about 20 computerized “slides” with information about local town matters, including meeting schedules, basic town services, and even a lost dog announcement. While the slides roll through on a continuous loop, jazz music is playing in the background. Is this about as exciting as it will get? The short answer is—probably.

The Selectmen have approved a committee of volunteers to start to explore further options with the channel, including televising meetings, either live or via tape delay. Among those volunteering are Nick Pappas, Frank Murray, Henry Ashmore, Patricia Heath, Linda Feury, Laura Trepanier and John Wuorinen. Their first meeting is scheduled for July 13th. The committee will figure out what type of programming ought to be on the cable channel, what equipment will be necessary, and how many volunteers will be needed to run the equipment.

Lamoine receives a franchise fee from Adelphia of 3% of cable bills, and the fund has about $8,000 with which to purchase equipment.

The Guts of The System
An equipment rack installed by Adelphia includes a modulator and laser light transmitter. The small pieces of equipment are surprisingly noisy with a cooling fan, and quite warm on hot summer days.
