Historical Society Happenings

By Susan Wuorinen

The Lamoine Historical Society continues to build on this past winters cataloguing of the collection. Steel wire shelving was purchased and now holds the hundreds of historic documents. Thanks to Anne Stocking, the Society has submitted a request for a grant from the Maine State Archives for archival materials to help preserve these documents. The Society meets for work sessions on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 9 to 11 A.M. to catalogue the collection. Call Brooke Childrey at 667-6919 for more information. This is an excellent way to learn the rich history of Lamoine.

At the May meeting officers were elected. President Jo Cooper, Vice President Anne Stocking, Recording Secretary Marian McFarland, and Treasurer, Walter McFarland. Susan Wuorinen was appointed as Corresponding Secretary at the June meeting.

The meeting on July 28 will be "World War II Memory Fest" Did you know that the army had maneuvers at Lamoine Beach? Do you remember ration books, air-raid wardens, and black-outs? Come join this informal discussion with the residents of Lamoine who participated in this war and learn how it impacted this small coastal community, at 7:00 at the Lamoine Baptist Church. Refreshments will be served.

August 25th at 7:30 there will be a repeat the popular "Road show". Bring your antiques and treasures to the East Lamoine Meeting House for valuation by a professional appraiser.

The Annual meeting will be held on September 22. Place, time and speaker are to be announced. There will be pie and ice cream.

Join the Lamoine Historical Society. Annual membership fee is 5.00. Call Marion McFarland 667-8893 for more information.

Learn more about the Lamoine Historical Society at membership table at the Lamoine Art Fair on July 7 at the East Lamoine Meeting House.

In case you haven't noticed the front of the East Lamoine Meeting house desperately needs painting. Any donations to keep this historic building in good repair would be greatly appreciated. They can be made to Walt McFarland, 26 Douglas Highway, Lamoine Maine 04605.
