House Numbers Available

(Lamoine) - Perhaps the most frustrating thing for ambulance, police and fire personnel responding to an emergency call is being unable to find the right house. Many homes in Lamoine do not have their physical address number prominently displayed. Downeast TRIAD has made metal, reflective number signs available inexpensively. House number signs cost as little as $4.00 and are constructed by inmates at the Penobscot County Jail.

Order forms are available at the Town Office or on the town's website (www.lamoine-me.gov) by clicking on the House Numbering Offer line.

Labor Department Likely To Waive Fine

(Ellsworth) - An inspector from the Maine Bureau of Labor Standards says he will recommend that the town pay no fine as it has corrected all the violations found at the fire station during a surprise inspection last May.

Fire Chief George “Skip” Smith and Assistant Chief Stu Marckoon met with the investigator September 30th and presented the documentation that was not immediately available when the surprise inspection took place. The town was cited for lack of training records, firefighter medical records and fit testing records. All the records were provided on the follow up investigation. The BLS official said the fire department presentation made his job easy.

Woodshed Sold

(Lamoine) — Richard McMullen of Shore Road was the successful (and only) bidder for a small woodshed (below) left on the former Nate and Marti Anderson property. Richard mows the property for the town, as well as the town hall and Lamoine Beach properties. His offer was to provide free mowing for this season at the former Anderson lot in exchange for the shed. Selectmen eagerly agreed.

Veterans' Memorial Eyes Grange Lot

(Lamoine) - Selectmen await a response from the Lamoine Grange about the possibility of locating a Veterans' Memorial on Grange property at Lamoine Corner. Linwood Brann of the Grange said they're not opposed to the idea, but want to make sure there is enough parking for Grange functions. The memorial idea is in its infancy, a result of some discussion on the Long Range Planning Committee. Reggie McDevitt of Shore Road asked the Selectmen to inquire about the Grange Lot. If all goes well, fundraising and planning may start in the coming months.

Fire Department Walls To Be Scrubbed

(Lamoine) — After having no luck getting a paint contractor to apply a new coat of paint to the interior of the Lamoine Fire Station, Selectmen awarded a cleanup job to Bear Meadow Enterprises of Ellsworth. Owner Mary Harney, a fire department member, will scrub down the walls and ceilings, removing years of soot and dust buildup. A test run on one wall by fire department personnel found cleaning would be a big improvement. It's a big job. Harney will start in early October and should be done by February. Her bid was for $3,600, well under the painting budget.

Two Join Fire Dept.

(Lamoine) - The Lamoine Fire Department welcomes new member Jonathan Harris and Robert Gettman . Jon's a longtime Shore Road resident, and brother-in-law to firefighter Mike Jordan. Bob is a new arrival to Lamoine, having purchased a home on Partridge Cove Road. Both are going through Firefighter I training, with Jon hoping to become an interior rated firefighter soon. The new members brings the active membership to about 30 people.

Fire Department Chowder Supper October 29th

(Lamoine) — The annual Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department Clam Chowder Dinner will be held Saturday evening October 29th from 5PM until 7PM. The dinner will include clam chowder, casseroles, baked beans, rolls and dessert. Tickets will be available at the door or from the Stu Marckoon at the Town Office ahead of time. Additionally, firefighters will go door to door on October 23rd selling tickets.

The dinner has become an annual tradition in Lamoine, with fire department personnel and supporters doing the cooking and serving. Chef Albert Herrick will make the chowder again this year.

Mildred Jordan is the brains behind the event, organizing the donations of food and supplies for the dinner. Proceeds go to the fire department which uses money for equipment purchases.

Fire Department On Pace For Record Year

(Lamoine) - With a quarter of a year left, Lamoine's fire department is on pace to exceed 60-calls for the first time ever. The summer proved to be busier than usual with a variety of calls. The most serious was a house fire on Foster Street in Ellsworth at which a Lamoine crew of five provided interior firefighting support. The department also responded to a Trenton house fire in August.

The fire department responded to a couple water calls. One involved a sailor from Pennsylvania whose mast snapped as a squall was approaching. He was able to get to safety. The other was an assist to the State Police who were called to a vehicle found in the water off Lamoine Beach. Rescue personnel determined no one was in the SUV, and the owner later showed up and explained he got caught by the tide.

Several accidents required fire department response. Two of the accidents involved motorcyclists, one who suffered head injuries in early October. The other motorcycle crash involved a driver who fled the scene. Sheriff's deputies are investigating.

A burning mattress on Mill Road was quickly extinguished in August at the same time as the vehicle in the water report. A windstorm in late September created three calls as tress went down. One of the trees tore down power lines on Route 184, leaving much of Lamoine without power for a couple of hours.

A thunderstorm in July set off the fire alarm at the Town Hall. Firefighters responded quickly but found no problems.

Lamoine VFD helped Ellsworth at this house fire on Foster Street in Ellsworth. The exact cause was not known. The home has since been torn down. No injuries were reported.

Fire Department Sells T-Shirts, Auction Succeeds

(Lamoine) — The Lamoine Fire Department has printed up T-Shirts for sale as part of a fund raising effort. The shirts are black with white lettering, indicting support for the LVFD. The shirts will be available at the Chowder Dinner on October 29th and from Lieutenant Brett Jones. Cost is $13 and $15 for XXL & up.

The annual auction was held in August and raised nearly $5,500 this year. Auctioneer Chas Hare missed his first auction in 10-years as his mother-in-law suddenly passed away. Mike Hodgkins, a professional auctioneer from Trenton ably filled in. The best news of all was that virtually everything donated was sold, greatly speeding up the cleanup. Among the items sold was an antique pump organ donated by the Moldawer family on Marlboro Beach Road.
