Flu Shots Offered November 9th

(Lamoine) — Maine Coast Memorial Hospital will offer flu shots on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 from 3PM to 5PM at the Lamoine Town Hall. It's believed the shots will cost $5.00.

Last year the flu shot clinic was canceled due to a shortage of vaccine. Health Link officials say they expect plenty of vaccine to go around this year. More details will be available on the town website. (Go to Poster)

Harbormaster, Deputy Appointed

(Lamoine) — The sudden death of Bill Pinkham on July 4th left a hole in town government. Pinkham was the town's harbor master. His deputy, Gerald Ford, agreed to step into Bill's shoes. Ford is a certified Harbor Master, having served as deputy for several years and attending the annual training conference in Castine.

Assisting Gerry at the harbor in front of Lamoine State Park will be David Herrick of Douglas Highway. Herrick is a lobster fisherman and volunteer firefighter and offered to be the Deputy Harbor Master.

Harbor Master Ford has attempted to reconstruct the mooring waiting list from the records left behind by Pinkham. The new list is posted on the town's website.

Town Official Receives Award & Certification

(Lamoine) — Administrative Assistant Stu Marckoon is now a certified municipal manager through the Maine Town & City Management Association (MTCMA). Certification indicates that Marckoon has attended numerous training courses and participated in a number of municipal related activities within the community. He received the certification at the annual MTCMA banquet in August in Phippsburg.

Marckoon was also given the prestigious leadership award by MTCMA for his work on that organization's website. Assistant Town Clerk Kathy DeFusco, Stu's wife Bonnie and his parents were secretly invited to the ceremony at Sebasco Estates, and the award was quite the surprise.

Stu also announced to the Selectmen this summer that he will return to work part-time for radio station WNSX (97.7 FM) in Ellsworth, anchoring the morning newscasts before coming to work at the town hall. He was employed as a radio and television news director prior to his hiring in Lamoine in 1993.

Church Steeple Replaced

(Lamoine) — To look at the Lamoine Baptist Church steeple today, you wouldn't notice much difference from a year ago. The new steeple, though, is very different. For one, it's made of fiberglass, and it's in very good condition.

Pastor Dr. David Henry said the old steeple was installed in 1962 with a weather vane on top. Apparently the vane was not secured properly and water seeped inside during windstorms, causing the wooden structure to start to rot.

The steeple replacement is part of a big building renovation project that included painting the front of the church this summer, and roof replacement this fall. The church is raising funds for the work, with the $44,000 goal partially met already.

Ever wonder what's inside the steeple?

In Lamoine, it's empty space, and signatures. Folks signed the new Baptist Church steeple prior to its installation

Vital Statistics

(Lamoine) — The July 2005 Lamoine Quarterly was so jam packed with news that we didn't have room for the Vital Statistics Column, so this will cover the last six months.

Births

Lots of new residents to welcome. On April 7th Jenna Leigh Daggett of Douglas Highway was born in Bangor. Her mom had a scare a few days before Jenna's arrival. Firefighters helped free her when her leg got caught between steps and the doorway of her home.

Olive Wiley Taylor also of Douglas Highway was born on April 15th. Samuel Christopher Ingram of South Road arrived May 6th. The sign at the Sherwin Williams store in Ellsworth where his dad works has proclaimed the arrival for months. Sophia Jane Liebermann of Mud Creek Road was born on May 29th, the day before Grace Marie Gleason of Berry Cove Road. June 26th is the birthday for Evan Rile McAndrew of Buttermilk Road. Madison Rene Rome of Shore Road arrived on August 20th.

Our final arrival happened September 25th and has deep roots in Lamoine. Alida Eleanor Hodgkins lives in the old Hodgkins House at the Needles Eye/Route 204 intersection. Her ancestors were some of the original Lamoine residents.

Deaths

Several Lamoine residents passed away in the past six months. John “Jack” Maguire of Douglas Highway died April 7th, leaving behind several children and grandchildren. Jack was a former banker and spent is later years as a real estate agent and was a frequent visitor in the Town Hall doing property research. Erastus Walker of Sugarbush Drive died on May 13th. Janina “Jina” Haslam of Linden Lane died June 20th (see July Quarterly) after she was struck by a car. William “Bill” Pinkham of Buttermilk Road died on the 4th of July after running a road race (see July Quarterly). Gail Marie Fowler of Douglas Highway died on July 20th, leaving behind a large family. On August 3rd Brenda Norwood of Buttermilk Road lost her battle with cancer. Brenda was a delightful and frequent visitor to the Town Office. Her parents remain at their Buttermilk Road home.

Lamoine School Hires Special Ed Teacher

(Lamoine) — The new director of the resource room at the Lamoine Consolidated school is a familiar face at the school. Tracy Willis was hired during the summer to replace Jean Harris who retired at the end of the last school year.

Until her hiring, Tracy's title at school had been “mom”. Her daughter Sara is a student at Lamoine, and the Willis family calls Mill Road their home. Her husband Jim is the police chief in Mt. Desert. Tracy is an experienced special educator, and principal Val Perkins says he's tickled to have her on board. Tracy is also the cross-country coach.

Principal Perkins reports that opening day brought 137 students to the Lamoine School, including 18-new students. That's 6-students fewer than opening day in 2004. There were 9-new kindergarten students, while an 8th grade class of 17 graduated last year, accounting for nearly all the difference.

One change this year is that breakfast is no longer sold before school opens. Federal Rules prohibit sales of food unless it's part of the National School Lunch food service program meeting nutritional guidelines.

School Board Member Named

(Lamoine) — School Committee members have appointed Julie Tilden to fill a seat left vacant with the resignation of Linda Haft. Tilden will serve until Town Meeting in 2006 as allowed by state law.

Julie lives on Shore Road with her husband Duane Crawford and their sons Tyler and Jordan. Tyler graduated from 8th grade last June. It's expected Julie will run again in March for the seat she now occupies. Mrs. Haft resigned to take a new job in Kentucky.
