Spring Proves Relatively Quiet For Fire Department

(Lamoine) — After more than a year of frequent calls for help, the Lamoine Fire Department finally got a bit of a break during the 2nd quarter of 2006. The pagers only went off for 7-calls during the three month period.

The most serious fire came on April 29th when two teen-aged boys playing with a bottle rocket ignited a dry field on Shore Road. They quickly called 9-1-1 and the LVFD team had the fire knocked down within minutes. Neighbors helped, wielding brooms and Indian Tanks in the smoky fire.

Firefighters responded to a pair of accidents on Pinkhams Flats. A 25-year old woman went off the road at 3:30 AM on May 26th, rolling her car over. She was able to walk to a nearby home and call for help. The other call involved a similar roll over accident, this time at 8AM on June 12th. Neither woman was badly injured.

Lamoine firefighters stood by the Ellsworth station in early April as they dealt with a fire at a downtown apartment complex. Firefighters also stood by the station during a red flag warning day during a dry spell at the end of April.

Firefighters removed a tree from Partridge Cove Road during a wind and rain storm on the 8th of June. And on June 27th firefighters responded to a report of a burning box in the Bangor Hydro Maintenance facility parking lot on Jordan River Road. The fire was out before arrival.

LVFD Auction Is August 11th

(Lamoine) — The annual auction by the Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department will be held on Friday, August 11, 2006. The preview begins at 5PM and the bidding starts at 6pm. The Lamoine Grange will serve refreshments.

The auction is one of the big annual fund raisers for the fire department which is looking to supplement the gear on the Holmatro Rescue Tool. Generally the auction raises $4,000 to $6,000.

Donations to the auction can be arranged through Stu Marckoon at the Town Office or with any firefighter. Furniture, Computers, Appliances and TV's cannot be accepted as they generally don't sell well and require a disposal fee. Professional auctioneer and volunteer firefighter Chas Hare of Stockton Springs, has agreed to run the bidding again this year.

Grange Programs Planned

By Carol Korty

(Lamoine) The Lamoine Grange has lots to offer the community in 2006. About a hundred people enjoyed the first turkey dinner of the summer on June 4 th . If you missed out or if you want to come back for more, there'll be another chance on July 16 th and September 3 rd at 12:30 PM, but it's a good idea to arrive early.

Three open meetings have been scheduled for this summer. The first featured a presentation by Lamoiner Jim Willis talking about “What Our Law Enforcement is Doing to Protect Us”. His experience as Chief of Police for Mt. Desert and eighteen years as a Hancock County Deputy gave him a wealth of knowledge, much of which he shared with us on June 22 nd .

On Wednesday, July 19 th , the next session will be “Getting Into the Act! – Playreading for Amateurs”. Folks of all ages are invited to come at 7 PM to read Hide and Seek , by Allen Sternfield , our Transfer Station Manager! This one act play has had considerable national success. We'll also read Mr. Hare Takes Mr. Leopard for a Ride , by Carol Korty . This piece has been widely produced as part of her Plays from African Folktales, published by Scribners and Players Press. Jumping back to 19 th century, there'll be a scene from Shore Acres by James A. Herne about Lamoine! Herne spent a summer at the Shore Acres hotel near Lamoine Beach and subsequently produced and toured his play coast to coast with great success in 1894.

On Wednesday, August16th, Lamoiners Kathy Stanley of Sewing by the Sea and Anne Curtis of Food Magic will share how they have adapted the traditional home arts of sewing and cooking for busy folks of today's world. Regular Grange meetings are held the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7 PM. New members are always welcome.

Emergency Plan Review Set

(Lamoine) - The Selectmen will hold their August meeting at the Lamoine Fire Station to review a proposed Emergency Operations Plan. The new plan will replace the present document that was adopted several years ago and once served as a model for other towns. Emergency Management Agency officials offered the basic language to the town and it has been incorporated in a draft document in order to bring to town into compliance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The Selectmen and fire department officials will review the draft plan on August 17th.

FD Roof Job Awarded Locally

(Lamoine) - Voters at a special town meeting made it clear they wanted local contractor Michael Jordan to replace the fire station roof this summer and with water proof materials under the shingles. Jordan was selected from among five bidders for the job, and the town meeting approved spending $16,800. Jordan expects to start the work in a few weeks.

Open House Held At Fire Station

(Lamoine) A few dozen people turned out for lunch at the Lamoine Fire Station for the department's annual open house on May 21st. Pro Auto of North Lamoine provided an old car so that firefighters could demonstrate how they dismantle a wrecked vehicle to extricate accident victims. The newest firefighting equipment was on display and folks got to see the newly painted interior of the fire truck bays.

Firefighter Mary Harney who runs a paint contracting business finished the painting job inside the station after cleaning the walls and ceilings of years of diesel soot buildup. Harney was the only bidder on the job last fall.

Cemetery Road Improved

By Doug Stewart

(Lamoine) - Edna Coyne, Secretary/Assistant Treasurer of the East Lamoine Cemetery Association asked her new neighbors, Sue Hibbs, 346 Lamoine Beach Rd.,Doug Stewart,Lamoine Beach Rd. along with Bill Parkinson, husband of her cousin, Marilyn Rosebrook Parkinson,Cove Rd. to help with the spring cleanup of the East Lamoine Cemetery on Saturday, May 13, little did she realize it would turn into a five day project involving the voluntary services of local contractors, Richard King and Ron MacQuinn.

Following the pick-up of last year's wreaths, flowers and other debris, Sue and Doug soon had their chain saws buzzingup dead falls that had accumulated over the years along the edges of the cemetery and the two private lanes accessing the cemetery. When smoothing out the ruts and lowering the crown in the road proved to be too much for Bill's garden tractor and blade, calls went out to MacQuinn, who donated material, and King, who brought in some heavy equipment to spread the gravel and level the road.

In addition to improving access to the cemetery, the Lamoine Historical Societyan additionalof the work. Their section of the road was smoothed and gravel was laid down. King also realigned the stone along the side of the Church to get them back to their original configuration.
