Perrin to Address Future History of Maine Coast

Area author, photographer, and naturalist Steve Perrin will speak to the Lamoine Conservation Commission at its October 10th meeting on the topic of challenges facing the Maine coast and what we can do about them. The talk is at 7 p.m. in Lamoine Town Hall .

Perrin's thesis is that if we keep taking the coast for granted, we are going to lose it in short order. Our coastal assumptions and traditions have gotten us to this point; if we want a productive coast in our children's future, we have to transform our fundamental attitudes toward both the land and water sides of the coast.

The coast, Perrin says, is not so much rockbound as it is a living community of marine organisms most of us are unfamiliar with. To protect the coast, we must include those organisms in our thinking, and act accordingly. Which will require an expansion of our self-interests to include the lifeforms we unwittingly depend on for our personal well-being.

Topics covered will include getting the big picture, coastal ecosystems, stewardship, sustainability, public trust doctrine, and the transformation we must make to assure a healthy and productive coast for the forseeable future.

Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call Donna Theall 667-7323.
