Lamoine Conservation Commission Presentation

December 10, 2008 - 7PM @ Town Hall

New Wildlife Habitat Maps of Lamoine

The Lamoine Conservation Commission is hosting a “Beginning with Habitat” presentation on Wednesday December 10 th at 7pm at the Lamoine Town Hall . There are new maps of the natural habitats of Lamoine. What do the wildlife, local ponds, forest lands and coastal areas look like now? What will Lamoine look like in 50 years? Lamoine is experiencing unprecedented changes in land ownership and use, making the future of our natural habitats, rural character and quality of life less certain . Come see the new maps and learn some of the hows and whys of conserving habitat at the local level.

Beverly Atkins of Beginning with Habitat will present the maps and data for the town of Lamoine , including important natural features such as rare species habitats, deer yards, wetlands important to waterfowl and wading birds, and large undeveloped habitat blocks. She will discuss ways to use this information in local land use and conservation planning. There will be a question/discussion period and light refreshments.

Beginning with Habitat is a partnership whose goal is to help communities maintain healthy populations of all native wildlife species and the habitat upon which they depend. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Natural Areas Program, Maine Audubon Society, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Maine State Planning Office, The Nature Conservancy, and Maine Coast Heritage Trust have joined together to pool their data and expertise and make it available to towns and conservation groups.
