Minutes - August 9, 2017 (Draft, subject to correction)
Members Present: Larissa Thomas, chair; Linda Penkalski, Doug Stewart, Jeff Cosulich, Kerry Diskin
Alternate members present: Mike Jordan
Alternate member absent: Diane Nichols
Meeting was convened at the Lamoine Town Hall by Chairman Thomas at 7:01 PM.
Welcome Diane: Diane Nichols was welcomed as a new alternate member of the commission following a unanimous vote by the Select Board.
Maine Coastweek: There are three crews picking up trash. Diane’s on September 16th on upper Skillings, Larissa’s on September 23rd on Seal Point section of Skillings and Jeff on September 23rd at the State Park. We continue to solicit additional volunteers to help.
Diane has contacted Chris James, Lamoine Consolidated School, about an edible classroom garden/composting concept. More information at October’s meeting.
GET WET! Funding: Linda spoke with John Peckenham about the supplies we need. He gave her the names of a number of suppliers. Linda will contact the Maine Community Foundation and Healthy Acadia about grant possibilities. It was suggested that we could partner with Ellsworth via Michelle Gagnon, city planner. Linda will contact Chris James about getting funds through “Donors Choose”.
September 13th Aaron Dority public talk: Mike will print copies of the flyer at the Town Hall for Larissa and Linda to post. Larissa will check with Stu about the AV Technician taping the presentation. Linda will send the press release to the Ellsworth American on August 30th.
November 8th public talk: Dr. Francis Drummond, University of Maine, will speak about bumble bees.
Comprehensive Plan: Larissa has attended two sessions. Before the next public informational meeting they will give Larissa draft goals so we can weigh in to ensure that concerns of LCC are taken into account.
Blunt’s Pond Day: Doug will contact the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation Commission to see if the invasive plant specialist is available to help us at a community field day at Blunt’s Pond in September, 2018.
Lamoine Quarterly: Articles have to be sent to Stu by mid-September. Doug will write an article about the sale of compost bins. Linda will write an article about GET WET! and solicit for donations. Larissa will write a summary of the latest news.
Water quality: Kerry reported that the State of Maine tests for e-coli at beaches, etc. There is also the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program and volunteers test the lake water for clarity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, Phosphorus, chlorophyl, pH, color and conductivity. Kerry will get training through the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program in order to subsequently organize local volunteer groups. One possibility discussed was expanding GET WET! to incorporate field testing at Blunt’s Pond, involving fifth grade students. Activities for students and volunteers could also focus on invasive plants.Simon Trail Tree Walk: The tree walk is scheduled for September 11th in the afternoon.
Planning/Select Boards: Mike reported on key points from the Planning Board meeting

The minutes of the July 12, 2017 meeting were approved as distributed.
Follow-up actions and who will do them:
Linda will contact Maine Community Foundation and Healthy Acadia about grants for GET WET!.
Linda will contact Chris James about soliciting funds for GET WET! through Donors Choose.
Larissa and Linda will distribute the flyers that Mike will print for the September Public Talk.
Duties for September 13th Public Meeting: Linda- bake, Doug- lemonade or iced tea, Jeff- water, Larissa- mugs and hot tea, Diane-nuts, Kerry-napkins.
Larissa will check into using the gym(already set up for videotaping) or coordinate with Stu about the AV Technician taping the September 13th presentation. Larissa will also reserve the space at the school for the November 8th presentation.
Linda will e-mail the press release to the Ellsworth American on August 30th.
Doug will contact the new invasive species expert at the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation Commission.
Doug will write an article about the sale of compost bins, Linda will write an article about GET WET!(including soliciting donations) and Larissa will write an article summarizing the latest LCC news for the October Lamoine Quarterly- due to Stu mid-September.
Kerry will take the lead on water quality testing at Blunt’s Pond. She will report back in October what she learned.
Linda will e-mail Iris Simon and Tracy Willis about what they need to get ready for the September 11th tree walk.
