Minutes - October 11, 2017 (Draft, subject to correction)

Members Present:  Larissa Thomas, chair; Doug Stewart, Jeff Cosulich, Kerry Diskin,

Members Absent: Linda Penkalski,

Alternate members present:  Mike Jordan, Diane Nichols

Others in Attendance : Carol Korty, Brian Thomas

Meeting was convened at the Lamoine Town Hall by Chairman Thomas at 7:00 PM.

Topics discussed:

Upcoming Presentation : by Dr. Frank Drummond from UMaine on bumble bees. November 8, 2017 at the school gym. Members of Conservation Commission to provide same refreshments as last presentation.

Edible Classroom Garden / Composting Project :  Diane has gotten approval from Stu to utilize an area behind the fire station. Still a couple of particulars to iron out and a concern was brought up about the attraction of certain wildlife being drawn to the area and how to minimize / discourage their presence.

Get Wet! : the Maine Community Foundation application for equipment funding will be coming up in October. Linda is closely watching for the announcement re: application requirements and deadlines.

Blunt’s Pond Water Quality Testing : Kerry will make arrangements to attend a training session for herself to become proficient with the testing metrics through Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program, hopefully in May. Actual testing at Blunt’s will be scheduled after that – there may be some testing protocols that will impact the timing of the tests at the pond. It was also determined that the Conservation Commission will not be responsible for conducting the testing for E. coli.

Maine Coastal Cleanup : was a huge success with 21 volunteers covering 3 separate waterfront areas and collecting 25 bags of trash weighing in at 245 lbs! Because of the amount of interest in the initiative, it was decided to try to expand the coverage area next year.

Blunt’s Pond Day:  Doug will contact the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation Commission to see if the invasive plant specialist is available to help us at a community field day at Blunt’s Pond in September, 2018. A possible cookout was discussed as part of the day’s offerings. More details to be finalized during December meeting.

Lamoine Quarterly : Doug’s story on the composting bins was distributed and discussed, Doug will make a few minor changes, as the results of a brief discussion, prior to submitting the article to Stu for publication :

--- cost of the bins?

--- can they be delivered? How much? Needs to be added to the cost of bins.

--- if no delivery, how will they be picked up

Board of Appeals Ordinance : a lengthy and lively discussion surrounding the new proposed ordinance took place and Larissa has documented the comments of the Commission, to be submitted separately.

Motions and Outcomes:

The minutes of the August 9, 2017 meeting were approved as distributed. (The meeting in September was a presentation by Aaron Dority from FBC)

The meeting was adjourned at 8:28 PM.
