Lamoine Recreation Committee

Minutes, August 28, 2015

The meeting came to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Lamoine Town Office.

Present were: Recreation Committee Members Greg Stone, Elie Khoury, Becky Mason, Elizabeth Stanley, Jason Trenholm, Patti Haslam, and Sharon Smythe

Minutes of July 24, 2015:  Greg made motion to tentatively approve minutes. Amendments, if any, will be discussed in next meeting. Elie 2nd. Vote in favor was 5-0.

Welcome new members:  We welcomed new alternate members, Patti Haslam and Sharon Smythe.

Slow Ride Sunday:  Slow Ride Sunday will run as planned, Sunday from 11 – 4. Greg will put traffic ease signs up.

Soccer Program Review:  There was a great turnout with about 40+ signed up. There will be a U6 team, 2 U8 teams, and a U11 team. Practices will be Wednesdays, 5:30 – 7 at the Lamoine School. It was discussed that there were some who may not know about the program. Becky will make flyers to send home for grades K through 5.

Elizabeth reported she applied online for scholarships offered by Dick’s Sporting Goods and was approved for $200 for each seasonal recreational sport (4 $50 gift checks). Elizabeth indicated there are not enough soccer balls for all of the programs. She requested we use the gift checks to purchase soccer balls. Greg made motion to approve using gift checks to purchase soccer balls for the Rec Soccer Program. Elizabeth 2nd. Vote in favor was 5-0.

Elizabeth stated the soccer program still needs first aid kits (4 teams). She reported Tim Jordan said he can referee Rec games when available. She said we should look into having high school students from MDI and EHS get community hours. Becky reported it is the guidance counselors that usually oversee this.

Pick-Up Basketball:  Jason would like to run this program again. There is an option to do this outside now as the new basketball hoop unit will be installed soon. Both units in the gym and outside are adjustable, which can now be utilized with younger children. Elizabeth stated the Open Gym was successful last year. Jason will let us know when he is available to run the program.

Comprehensive Town Plan:  Greg recommended we come up with question we want to ask to be put on the comprehensive town questionnaire (e.g., size, facilities, maintenance, expansion, etc).

Rec Committee Finances:  Greg requested a status report from Stu. Our starting income is $765.00, which was drawn from the Rec. Karate Program. There have been a couple of purchases (5 banners for Slow Ride Sunday - $138.22 and Rec T-Shirts - $157.20).

Elizabeth gave registration money to Greg. He will submit to Stu. We will be getting money from returnables from the Lamoine Town Dump. We do not know the total as of yet. Elizabeth submitted a $250 donation from the Winter Harbor Food Service.

Other Business:  Next programs to be offered will be Rec Basketball and PeeWee Cheering. This will be on the agenda for the next meeting. Becky will work on “Coaches Wanted” flyer and will see if the Betty and Dawn will put this on the flat screen at the school.

Next meeting - The committee agreed to meet again on September 12th at 9:00 a.m.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by Becky Mason, Secretary, Lamoine Recreation Committee.
