Lamoine Recreation Committee

Minutes - December 12, 2015 (Draft, subject to correction)

The meeting came to order at 9:02 a.m. at the Lamoine Town Office.

Present were: Greg Stone, Becky Mason, Elizabeth Stanley, Heidi Garrison & Patti Haslam. Comprehensive Planning Committee Members Fred Stocking, Bob Christie, Michael Jordan, Kathryn Gaianguest & Valerie Sprague.

Minutes of October 16, 2015: Greg made motion to accept minutes as written. Becky 2nd. Vote in favor was 5-0.

Meet with Comprehensive Planning Committee: Introductions were made. Fred reported the last Comprehensive Plan made was in 1996, therefore, they have revisited this and sent out a survey to the town to devise a comprehensive plan that address the needs of the town, i.e., changes, unmet needs, etc. Greg gave an overview of programs the Recreation Committee has offered since our formation in February of 2015: Recreational Soccer, Indoor Soccer, Recreational Basketball, PeeWee Cheering, Slow Ride Sundays, and family fun day Sundays. There were suggestions to have the committee offer more programs for adults and that has an intergenerational and aspect to it, as well as “lifetime” sports such as tennis, swimming, hiking. It was discussed that it is our goal to offer a wide range of activities to all age groups. A survey was developed to gauge the interests of the residents. There was also a discussion on marketing and getting the word out.

Both committee members were in agreement with offering information on what resources are currently in place, including hiking and snowmobile trails, safe biking routes, Blunt’s Pond, State Park, Lamoine Beach, etc. It was discussed that there are minimal building locations to hold indoor recreational activites. The school offers the largest space but gym time can be limited during the winter months. The Grange offers space for the Community Arts and it was suggested that more recreational activities could be used there once improvements were made.

Greg discussed moving forward, we are trying to get more involvement with coaching or running programs. It was explained that one does not need to be a member to run a program. We would like to have a variety of programs, active and leisure.

Lamoine Comprehensive Planning Committee - Fall 2015 Survey: We received copies of the responses to the survey. This will be further discussed at the next meeting.

Pee Wee Cheering: Heidi asked for clarification on the process of purchasing equipment. The payments received will go to Stu and the Town will reimburse purchases upon submission of receipts. We offer scholarships for cheering as well as all programs.

As time expired, the items on the agenda will be discussed during the next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 10:21 a.m.

Respectfully submitted by Becky Mason, Secretary, Lamoine Recreation Committee

Next meeting: The committee agreed to meet again on January 9, 2016 @ 9:00 a.m.
