Minutes, May 9, 2015 (Draft, subject to correction)
The meeting came to order at 9:02 a.m. at the Lamoine Town Office.
Present were: Recreation Committee Members Greg Stone, Tim Jordan, Elie Khoury, Becky Mason, Elizabeth Stanley, Heidi Garrison and School Board Member Brett Jones.
Minutes, April 18, 2015 – Greg moved to approve the minutes as written. Elie 2nd. Vote in favor was 5-0.
Review Current Programs/Report from Greg on meetings he attended – Indoor soccer concluded April 30th with 36 enrolled. Karate will conclude May 27th and will start back up in the fall.
Greg spoke briefly with Katrina Kane, Superintendent, he planned to attend their next meeting and requested to have that added to their agenda. Greg stated he met with Dawn, the principal of Lamoine School. She is in support of the programs the Lamoine Rec Committee would like to do and conduct at the school. Greg relayed to Dawn the Lamoine Rec supports the Ellsworth Football League, however, we would like to have priority over them for use of fields. It was determined Lamoine Rec would get second priority of school facilities after the school needs.
There was a discussion about field maintenance. Brett stated there was discussion during a school board meeting with Duane Crawford, head of the Ellsworth Football League (EFL), and there was an agreement EFL would pay a portion of the cost for field maintenance. Brett added that he plans to do maintenance on the softball and baseball fields within the next week. Greg was informed that the gym could be made available as long as they are notified, in advance, when it is needed.
Volunteer Coaches Request Survey – Elie designed a flyer for Volunteer Coaches Request. The flyers were left at the school and Betty Anderson, Lamoine Administrative Asst. & AD, added it to the newsletter (both electronically and handouts). Color copies were placed on the wall at the school and Lamoine Town Office.
Fall 2015/16 Calendar Planning Rec. Committee & Partners – Fall Rec Soccer, Winter Rec Basketball, Peewee Cheering, and Indoor Soccer are the main programs to be offered. More will most likely be added but we will focus on this for now. Becky offered to put together approximate start dates for all and bring it to the next meeting. She suggested we begin advertising and having the registration date 2-3 weeks prior to the Downeast Family Y. It was agreed by all members. Greg added that we could keep registration open past the registration date so that others may join later if needed.
Heidi stated she is willing to run softball scrimmages on Sundays. Families would be invited to play, it would be a “Family Fun Day” softball venue and all are encouraged to bring a glove and bat. She will get back to the committee on when she would be available to start this. For now we will shoot for the last Sunday of May (5/31/15). Becky will make up a flyer once specifics are provided.
Summer Programs – Possibly softball (Sunday Family Fun Day) and transition into soccer (not necessarily on Sundays). The Family Fun Day could be any activity, like Ultimate Frisbee, kickball, etc. This will be further discussed in the next meeting.
Spring/Summer Meeting Schedule – We did not get to this matter.
Other Matters For Public Discussion – Heidi reported the tennis court on Asa’s Lane is owned by the Haslam family. Tim stated Donna Crawford and Lisa Branch are on the Board that owns the land the court is on. There was discussion on approaching them about using the tennis court for recreation program via Lamoine Rec Committee. This will be further discussed in upcoming meetings.
Greg will talk to Stu and request the committee acquire an email.
Greg suggested that any flyers or forms the committee puts out should have our facebook page on it and email (if we acquire it).
Next Meeting – The committee agreed to meet on May 30, 2015 @ 9:00 a.m.
There being no further business to discussed, the meeting adjourned at 10:19 a.m.
Becky Mason, Secretary Lamoine Recreation Committee
