Lamoine Veterans Memorial Committee - Report for 2006
Acting upon the recommendation of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Board of Selectmen formed a committee to look into building a memorial commemorating Lamoine veterans. An organizational meeting was held in August, 2006. Joining the committee were Jo Cooper, William Davis, Kathy De Fusco, Ken Fredette, Reggie McDevitt, Marion McFarland, Walt McFarland, and George Smith.
The Committee elected Jo Cooper as Chairman, Kathy De Fusco as Secretary and Walt McFarland as Treasurer.
We began by looking at possible locations for a memorial. Initial suggestions included: the Town Hall, town property near the transfer station, (either across the road or at the former Anderson property), at the school or at the Grange Hall.
Members researched each of these and agreed that the Town Hall was the most suitable location. The Committee would like it to be attractive, respectful and accessible.
The Committee has researched other town memorials to get information on costs, designs and process. We have also done some research on stone that might be used. Next steps will be to consult with contractors and engineers about the site and to get plans drawn up. We also hope to have a stone bench donated by the Cole Family Foundation and to make that a part of the design.
When a design has been selected and costs are finalized, the Committee will make a recommendation to the Selectmen. Once the Town approves the project, we will then begin fundraising efforts to pay for the memorial, including writing grants and soliciting private donations. Costs for other towns have ranged from $40,000 to $85,000. The Committee may also recommend the establishment of a Town Fund for the project so that donations can be accepted to defray the cost.
Our next meeting will be March 21, 7:00 , at the Town Hall and we welcome interested members of the public.
Jo Cooper, Chair
