Lamoine Veterans Memorial Committee

Minutes of April 25, 2007

Members: Jo Cooper, Reggie McDevitt, Marion and Walt McFarland and Kathy De Fusco.

Public present: Marion McDevitt.

Guest speaker: Fred Wieninger of Wieninger Monuments.

The committee met on April 25, 2007 . Meeting called to order at 700 pm by Jo and minutes were approved with the correction of using the term “North side of Town Hall” in the sentence. The North side of Town Hall would be more appropriate. Bill Da Butler was thanked for his time in recording our meeting.

We agreed we will have to go to the Town to get approval for 1. Site application. 2. Monument approval. 3. Fund raising. 4. Maintenance of Memorial. 5. Landscaping. Marion McFarland asked if we can find out about flowers being put at the Memorial on Memorial Day Holiday.

Ken Fredette had sent e-mail asking if the committee would change meeting day to another because of prior commitments and the committee felt it was the most convenient day, we chose because of other boards and members. We certainly appreciate Ken's offer of starting a Pledge for fund raising.

Guest speaker Fred Wieninger had brought full scale drawing and granite samples to look at. He discussed the cost of design that Reggie and Kathy brought to him on April 12 at his shop in Milbridge. With our drawing sample now available to him, he estimated between $16,870 - $18,260 with base work being donated by Jay Fowler. The monuments weight is 14,000 lbs. Samples of granite and drawing are available at Town Hall for a short period of time, anyone interested please stop in to look at, we have to return granite samples to Fred soon.

We mentioned to Fred we are the recipient of the Cole Museum bench and discussed putting that bench at present flag area and getting pricing on 2 pink and gray benches for the Memorial to match the granite. Maintenance on the Memorial is simple, Fred stated, all you need is water and Clorox, with a good scrubbing once a year.

Once the order is place with Fred, completion of monument could be from 3 to 6 months.

Reggie wants wording to be addressed again for the memorial. The others members at the meeting felt the wording were enough. Three members were not at the meeting and will be contacted to look at samples and drawings and get their input.

Some possible ways of bringing the money in to get our memorial started were fund raising, public channel access, quarterly article, voters list, pledges, matching $1 to $1 funds, making a flyer available at the next voting day on June 12, and asking the Town for funding.

We thanked Fred for the time and effort, which he made possible to us at no cost for his presentation. He also stated he would donate the Eagle because of it being a tradition his father had started for Veteran Memorials. Cost of the Eagle alone is $600.00.

We decided the committee will should meet with Selectmen to bring our ideas, concerns and to see what the next step is.

Tentative meeting is scheduled for May 23rd and we will discuss fund raising.

Meeting adjourned at 830 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathleen De Fusco, Sec'y
