Fire Call - April 14, 2007

Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call at this garage at 272 Mud Creek Road. Automatic mutual aid from Hancock VFD was also used. First arriving units saw heavy smoke coming from the garage.

Hancock's pumper truck had been stationed nearby on US Route 1 on a training exercise and deployed a pair of hand lines. A quick attack was made inside to knock down the fire. SCBA crews were then able to manually open the garage doors and access the building.

A wood stove (left) inside the building was being used by a resident to heat the garage. It's believed combustibles stored near the stove and chimney ignited while the man working in the building went outside. He reported that he returned a few minutes later and saw the garage full of smoke. He used a fire extinguisher to no avail, called 9-1-1 and tried to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.

The remains of a milk crate (lower left) may have contained the object of ignition. The heat was so intense it melted or destroyed many other objects in the garage and rendered the electric openers (below) useless.

No one was injured. The homeowner was insured.
