Fire Call - July 19, 2008

Lamoine Firefighters were called to provide mutual aid at the Church of Life & Praise on State Street in Ellsworth on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at approximately 10:45 PM. On arrival, the back of the church was fully ablaze, and the fire was starting to spread into the front sanctuary area.
Because of the fire's quick progression, little could be done to fight the blaze on the inside. A crew of five airpack certified firefighters from Lamoine did enter the sanctuary and attempted to stop the fire from spreading, but the ceiling collapsed during that effort, weaked by the fire and from water being sprayed from the Ellsworth ladder truck outside. No one was injured, and firefighters exited the building shortly afterwards.
The Lamoine crew also helped to remove expensive musical instruments and amplification equipment and speakers, setting up a relay from inside to get the equipment out of the fire, water and smoke.
Trenton and Lamoine provided backup for Ellsworth during the fire, and the mutual aid companies were on scene for about 4-hours.
A key to getting the fire out was the aerial ladder truck from Ellsworth which dumped thousands of gallons of water on the fire from above. At right, the smoke and lights at the back of the building create an interesting effect. Fire officials estimated 70,000 gallons of water was used to put out the fire.
